Our first Library 2.024 mini-conference: "AI and Libraries: Applications, Implications, and Possibilities," will be held online (and for free) on Thursday, March 21st, 2024, from 12:00 - 3:00 pm US-Pacific Time. Our conference schedule is now posted (see below). And don't forget that we've added a second day of presentations ("AI and Libraries - Part II") on April 18th since we received so many good proposals (also listed below). We currently have over 9,500 registrations.

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW:

How has artificial intelligence impacted library services, resources, and work so far? How have libraries responded to these evolving technologies to better support their communities? It's been over a year since generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E have been introduced in public spaces and consciousness, but AI has been around long before these tools yet there are still lingering concerns, challenges, and considerations. Join us for this free virtual conference to learn how libraries and library workers are engaging with artificial intelligence tools in their libraries from research support to information literacy to technical services. The conversations held in the conference will address the practical implications of these tools in the profession.

Our special conference chair is Dr. Raymond Pun, the Academic and Research Librarian at Alder Graduate School of Education, and the Immediate Past President of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) and a Past President of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA).

Managing Stress in the Library: Strategies for Library Workers
A Masterclass with Loida Garcia-Febo
The Library 2.0 Mental Health and Wellness Series

OVERVIEW

Library workers often face a variety of stressors such as tight deadlines, high workloads, and other challenges related to providing access to information and services. It is of utmost importance to provide support and strategies to manage stress in the workplace. If these stressors increase, the well-being and effectiveness of the library workers can be seriously affected, which impacts the organization as well. When we implement stress management strategies, library workers can potentially improve their mental health and quality of life. Many experts also highlight how low levels of stress can help to maintain the professionalism and excellence that library workers are known for. All of this benefits both the library and the community it serves.

In this Masterclass, Garcia-Febo will provide an overview of how to understand and manage stress and anxiety and prevent burnout in the workplace. She will also share strategies preventing burnout, coping and dealing with difficult situations, and supporting the self-care and work-life balance that will help library workers to manage stress. Attendees will create a personalized Toolkit to help them implement stress-management, anxiety-reduction, and burnout-prevention strategies.

This 60-minute training is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by Loida Garcia-Febo. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

The Safe Librarian:
Feeling Safe and Being Safe at Work
Part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security / Essential Librarian Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW:

It’s hard to concentrate on your work in the library if you don’t feel physically, mentally, and emotionally safe.

Library staff can feel miserable, de-motivated, and disillusioned when confronted with patrons who have untreated mental health issues, who struggle with substance use, or who have a sense of entitlement that the library rules don’t apply to them. As most are aware, there has been a lot of talk recently about library staff quitting or leaving their jobs or even leaving the profession because of daily discomfort or fears for their safety. A job in the library dealing with the public requires being service-oriented, but also assertive; being helpful, but also with reasonable personal boundaries; and being thoughtful and aware, but safe and protected when confronted by patrons who are disruptive, disrespectful, and even moving toward dangerousness. It is demanding work.

Librarians and staff have the right to a safe work environment, and creating that safe workspace is a collective effort. This webinar is for both the library leader who is looking to understand how to re-orient their library culture around a safe and secure environment, and for the librarian or staff member who wants to ensure their own personal physical, mental, and emotional safety in their library.

LEARNING AGENDA:

What library leaders can do to protect staff.

How leaders can give library staff the tools necessary to report problems, develop responses, and enforce consequences for that small portion of patrons who disrespect the library space, its employees, and its users.

How leaders can work with their Library Board, local elected and appointed leaders, and your law enforcement agency to improve library safety.

How to develop personal physical, mental, and emotional safety habits that you can use to feel more safe and empowered while at work.

Individually building your situational awareness, coming to work, at work, and leaving work.

Dealing with awkward encounters, tense conversations, and stressful situations in ways that can minimize the impact of bad behaviors from some patrons.

Reading situations and people, quickly and fairly.

Assessing body language, tone, demeanor, and “mixed “ signals in patrons about to erupt with threats or violence.

Using intuition to decide how and if to approach, intervene, or support our co-workers.

Applying de-escalation tools that are a bit “outside the box.”

How and when to use “psychological self-defense.”

When to disengage in the name of good common sense and personal security.

Sharing information with colleagues and bosses about problem people, to develop better, safer responses.

Getting better help from security officers or police when it's necessary.

This 60-minute overview session is another in our “Essential Librarian Series,” designed to be shown to new staff and leaders and to provide a refresher for all who work in the library, and hosted by trainer, author, and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate, as well as a special training handout "The Safe Librarian."

Our first Library 2.024 mini-conference: "AI and Libraries: Applications, Implications, and Possibilities," will be held online (and for free) on Thursday, March 21st, 2024, from 12:00 - 3:00 pm US-Pacific Time. Our call for proposals is now open (see immediately below), and we are announcing today our closing keynote speaker, Dr. Maggie Melo. More information on Dr. Melow is at the bottom of the keynote bios.

We've also set a record for initial registrations with this event--over 3,300 just from the first email. We hope you will join us for this popular topic!

Emotional Intelligence: A Masterclass with Loida Garcia-Febo
The Library 2.0 Mental Health and Wellness Series

OVERVIEW

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is how you manage yourself and your relationships with others, according to Daniel Goleman, who popularized the construct in his book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ (1995). Essentially, this is the ability to manage both your own emotions and understand the emotions of people around you.

Why EI is important? We live in an ever-changing world; it can be difficult for everyone, and EI can help us better understand what people are feeling and why they feel that way. This can help us to strengthen communications, decision-making, and relationships between library workers, team members, and other people in general. EI is becoming a key resource to help us provide the support needed by team members during challenging / stressful times or during the introduction of changes in the library workflow. In this webinar, Garcia-Febo will deep dive in the themes of Emotional Intelligence. She will also share practical applications and tips throughout the program.

This 60-minute training is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by Loida Garcia-Febo. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

OVERVIEW:

Senior citizens love their libraries, support their libraries, and urge their elected and appointed officials to keep their libraries open and even press them to build new ones. Your library may have specific programs for senior patrons and you recognize and nurture those relationships with the ones who come to your library most often.

If you meet and greet seniors at your library facility, you may also have some concerns about their mobility, cognitive issues, and physical safety. Worse yet, elderly people are frequent victims of financial abuse from unscrupulous family members; “caregivers” (who steal from or physically abuse the person, instead of giving supportive, nurturing care); or strangers who became their “new best friend.” This session is all about building your awareness toward physical, cognitive, and abuse possibilities with our senior patrons.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Talking to elderly patrons with cognitive issues.

Preventing falls or other injuries inside the library.

Assessing potential caregiver abuse.

Being a Mandated Reporter: working with Adult Protective Services (APS).

Identifying a potential “sweetheart scam.”

This 60-minute overview session on how to respond step-by-step to service situations in the library is another in our “Essential Librarian Series,” designed to be shown to new staff and leaders and to provide a refresher for all who work in the library, and hosted by trainer, author, and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

Our first Library 2.024 mini-conference: "AI and Libraries: Applications, Implications, and Possibilities," will be held online (and for free) on Thursday, March 21st, 2024, from 12:00 - 3:00 pm US-Pacific Time.

Building Good Work Relationships: A Masterclass with Loida Garcia-Febo
The Library 2.0 Mental Health and Wellness Series

OVERVIEW

Our relationships with colleagues significantly impact attitudes and outcomes at work, have very real implications for personal and professional well-being, and can even impact our ability to live a full healthy life. Library workers are human beings and are impacted by the world's chaotic climate, the situation in their library’s community service area, and interactions with coworkers.

The teamwork that comes from library workers who have good working relationships is key to successfully tackling difficult situations, bringing ideas to fruition, developing library workers’ careers, and even contributing to the functioning of libraries at the heart of communities. It is also immensely helpful to have tools and strategies to build good working relationships with people we see every day, sometimes even for longer periods than family.

Everyone can improve skills related to building good working relationships with coworkers and managers. The information and recommendations in this webinar are customized specifically for library workers. Attendees will learn about how successful relationships look for those working in libraries, the ins and outs of positive and negative relationships, and how to deal successfully with the stressors impacting work relationships.

This 60-minute training is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by Loida Garcia-Febo. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

OUTCOMES:

Attendees will learn about principles for building and improving work relationships

Attendees will learn about stressors for library workers and strategies to manage them

Attendees will learn about establishing healthy boundaries

Stressful Service Situations:
A Step-by-Step Guide to Better Conversations With Patrons
(2023 Updated Version)
Part of the Library 2.0 Service, Safety, and Security "Essential Librarian" Series with Dr. Steve Albrecht

OVERVIEW:

It can be hard to talk with certain patrons, for a variety of reasons. Our ability to provide the best service possible to them means we have to be even better listeners and ask useful questions, especially when the patron is either under stress or having trouble listening or communicating with us. This session can help you get conversational control before things spiral in wrong directions and ruin the library experience for you and them.

LEARNING AGENDA:

What makes talking to rude or entitled patrons so tough?

How not to take it personally.

What can learn from the Hawaiians about excellent customer service?

Defining the Library Patron’s Customer Value Model.

The value of using questioning models: therapeutic, open-ended, closed-ended.

Talking to an angry parent.

Getting help for non-English speaking patrons.

Talking to a frustrated,confused patron.

Helping patrons with possible dementia issues.

What about the tearful patron?

This 60-minute overview session on how to respond step-by-step to service situations in the library is another in our “Essential Librarian Series,” designed to be shown to new staff and leaders and to provide a refresher for all who work in the library. It is is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by ALA author and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate. This is an updated version of this webinar for 2023.

OVERVIEW:

Some days are just tough. You're dealing with patrons and co-workers and the emotions that they are carrying with them. And, quite frankly, sometimes they are probably spewing those feelings all over you!

As a library professional, sometimes you encounter people who are having bad days. Their emotions are running high, their “Survival State” thinking is controlling them, and they just seem like they are looking for conflict.

You already know that no location or organization is immune from widely publicized conflicts that quickly and unexpectedly escalate. When patrons are being unreasonable and well, annoying, at the very least, you probably feel like no one can understand the stresses you are under and the frustrating people you deal with.

What would you give to know how to calm stressful communication situations before they get out of control, when it’s just a little spark and not a full-on bonfire? Do you want to know how and why and what to say to calm an angry person in seconds?

This Library 2.0 webinar will provide you with a few simple techniques to improve your abilities to prepare for and quickly resolve conflict before it turns into something more serious.

As Kerry Mensior says, “Use science and not speculation, to calm an angry person in seconds.”

LEARNING AGENDA:

Get foundational, succinct, and realistic approaches for getting rapport with and dealing with uncooperative people.

Apply de-escalation techniques in service situations with library patrons under stress.

Learn why some of the more common de-escalation techniques may actually make certain situations worse.

This 60-minute training webinar is presented by Kerry Mensior, Executive Director of The International De-Escalation Association, and hosted by Library 2.0 trainer, author, and library service, safety, and security expert, Dr. Steve Albrecht. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all participants.
